Lake George Churches to observe Good Friday and Easter with Stations of the Cross and sunrise service

Churches in Lake George are joining on Good Friday, April 14, to reflect on the final journey of Jesus by walking the Stations of the Cross through Lake George Village. The journey will begin at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church on Mohican Street at noon. This is a non-denominational event. All are invited.

The procession will travel to the Old Court House on Canada Street (north of Shepard Park) and continue on to Montcalm Street with stops at St. James Episcopal, Caldwell Presbyterian and the First United Methodist church. Devotees will then return to Sacred Heart for refreshments and fellowship. A shuttle will be provided for those who are unable to walk the route.

The Stations of the Cross devotion retraces Jesus’ steps beginning with Pontius Pilate’s court where Jesus was condemned to death. The 14 stations note significant occurrences along the way as Jesus carried his cross to Calvary. The final station is the tomb where his body was laid to await the Easter morning resurrection.

St. James in Lake George

The Stations of the Cross tradition has ancient roots.  In the 4th Century, following the legalization of Christianity, pilgrims would travel to the Holy Land and follow the original “Way of the Cross,” which was marked with stations. When access to Jerusalem was blocked, reproductions of the path were created in cities across Europe. Today, the Stations of the Cross are celebrated in churches around the world on Fridays during the penitential season of Lent

On Easter Sunday, April 16, the churches will hold an ecumenical sunrise service at Shepard Park. The service begins at 6:30 a.m.
