New Year’s Day Polar Plunge

The tradition of washing away the old year with a chilly dip into Lake George continues at Shepard Park Beach on Jan. 1, 2025. Sign up at Duffy’s Tavern, 320 Canada Street, on Dec. 31, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., or New Year’s Day starting at 10:30 a.m. The cost is $20. Proceeds benefit the Springfield Shriners Hospitals and the local Volunteer Fire Department that help with the event. Long-sleeved 2026 Polar Plunge t-shirts are available for $15. Plungers enter the lake in waves of 400 beginning at 1 p.m. The plunge is followed by a Polar Plunge Party at Duffy’s, 2-6 p.m., with Karaoke by Sam. First Day Hike

The Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club is leading a First Day Hike to the summit of Cat Mountain. The hike is 4.1 miles, rated moderately challenging. This is one of several New Year’s Day hikes being held across the state.

Join a naturalist on an approximately one-mile hike and observe how plants and animals prepare for winter. The hike includes a stop at a scenic vista overlooking Lake George. If there is 5 inches or more of snow, hikers will use snowshoes provided by Up Yonda. Registration is required. The cost is $6 per person plus a $5 per vehicle Day Use Fee. Free for members.
Up Yonda is also offering Naturalist-led snowshoe hikes on Jan. 17, 24, and 31, with one-hour hikes beginning at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Learn the basics of snowshoeing, animal tracking and winter ecology. The program will finish near the Up Yonda Farmhouse, where snowshoers can enjoy a campfire and hot cocoa. Visit the Up Yonda website for more information and to register.

Lake George Winter Carnival

The Lake George Winter Carnival has been a tradition since 1961. With or without snow and ice, expect winter fun that includes races (on the ice if the Lake is frozen), parades, cook-offs, children’s activities, bonfires, fireworks, dog talent shows, and polar plunges. The final weekend, March 7 & 8, features Lumberjack competitions for professional and rookie lumberjack athletes.

Tour the Fort and all its haunted corners. Guides will tell tales of unexplained phenomena on grounds that have seen much battle, savagery, and illness. Two tours are offered each night, a 6 p.m. tour that concludes with fireworks over the lake. The 7 p.m. tour begins with the fireworks show. Admission is $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and students (with student ID), and $15 for children aged 5 to 14. Tickets are available online at the fort’s Event Page.

The Village St. Patrick’s Day parade will march on Canada Street from West Brook Road to Amherst Street on Sunday, March 15. The parade steps off at 1 p.m.

Thurman Maple Days

For three weekends in March, Thurman sugarhouses open their doors for self-guided tours. Visitors can learn about maple syrup production and taste samples of maple products and other locally produced artisan foods. Activities include wagon rides, demonstrations and shopping at the craft market. Begin at the Thurman Town Hall, 311 Athol Road, where you may pick up a map and directory of farms.

French & Indian winter warfare reenactments combined with a sutlers fair, crafts and brew fest featuring local craft beverages. Reenactor groups from several historical periods will be on hand to discuss battle reenactment.

11:00 A.M. & 1:00 P.M. Reenactments of Vaudreuil’s Raid of 1757 will depict actions that took place during the six-day assault on the fort that involved more than 2000 men.

Bands N’ Beans – Lake George Arts Project fundraiser

The 32nd Annual Bands N’ Beans will feature 25 local restaurants competing for the Best Chili People’s Choice Award, along with a lineup of local musicians playing across two stages. Early-bird tickets are available online through March 28 for $30. Tickets may also be purchased at the door for $35. Admission includes five hours of live music and chili. Proceeds support the Lake George Arts Project’s free summer concert series, the three-day fall Jazz at the Lake Festival, and the year-round exhibits at the Courthouse Gallery.

fairies, pirates, and steampunk adventurers join for this combined festival/fantasy realm. The event includes live performances, vendors, workshops and talks on subjects such as spellcraft and Victorian engineering. There will be space for cosplay parades, aerial acrobatics and late-night parties.

Residents of Lake George throughout the town and village will be holding garage sales. Maps will be available beginning May 1 at the Village Offices, 20 Old Post Road. Maps will also be available at each sale. The Community-wide Garage Sale is followed by Free-to-All Days. May 4 through 8, residents may leave free items curbside (mattresses and appliances not allowed.) 3rd Annual Community Day Block Party

This kid-friendly block party features live entertainment, bounce houses, family activities and an outdoor food court on Montcalm Street. Most activities are free. St. James Episcopal Church, United Methodist Church and Caldwell Presbyterian Church will be open with arts and crafts fairs and food sales. Community Days is sponsored by the Town and Village of Lake George, Lake George Radio, several merchants, and the Lake George Regional Chamber of Commerce. Repose of the Fallen Dedication

The Courtland Street Reinterment Committee will be unveiling the Repose of the Fallen structures, where the remains of Revolutionary War-era soldiers and others who were patients at the 1776 smallpox hospital at Fort George will be reinterred. The ceremony is expected to draw several hundred people, including federal, state, and local officials.
The remains were uncovered in 2019 during a construction project on Courtland Street in the Village of Lake George.

Hudson Valley Volunteer Firefighter’s Association Convention

The Hudson Valley Volunteer Firefighters’ Association will be holding its 137th Annual Convention in Lake George. Highlights of the convention are a Block Party on Beach Road beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday and a Friday evening Mardi Gras parade with the theme “Happy Birthday USA.”
On Saturday, the Dress Parade steps off at 1 p.m. with columns of participating fire companies traveling from the North End of Lake George Village along Canada Street to Beach Road and ending at the Lake George Steamboat Company.

4th Annual Summer Loving Fun Fest

All proceeds benefit Kelly’s Angels, Inc., a local organization that helps children who have been affected by cancer and other life-threatening conditions.
