Frozen Fort presentations, Ghost Tours, Battles & Beverages offered at Fort William Henry

Fort William Henry Museum is inviting guests to step back 270 years in time to experience winter on the edge of the wilderness with living history sessions, exploration of paranormal activity, and winter battle reenactments combined with a craft beverage fair, sutlers’ market, and an 18th-century food tasting and talk.

Frozen Fort Tours

Weekends through Sunday, March 8, guests may join a Frozen Fort Tour. The interactive presentations, led by uniformed guides, explore the hardships of life in a fort that is buried in snow and ice. The tours are held three times a day, at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Guests may pre-purchase tickets online to receive a 10 percent discount. Tours include colonial games, hands-on crafts, outdoor fun (weather permitting) and three floors of exhibits. Guests will have the option of purchasing snacks and beverages to enjoy by a firepit.

Phantoms & Fireworks

On Saturday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 7, the fort offers Phantoms & Fireworks tours. Fort William Henry has seen wars and deadly epidemics, and many employees and visitors claimed to have witnessed paranormal activity believed to be the spirits of those who died in and around the fort. The ghost tours explore these claims.

The tours are scheduled for 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., just before and immediately following the Lake George Winter Carnival fireworks display over Lake George. Fort William Henry, at the head of the lake, is a prime location for watching the fireworks. Book a tour online for a 10 percent discount.

Battles & Beverages

In March 1757, French forces attacked Fort William Henry. On Saturday, March 21, the French and Indian War Society and The Fort William Henry Corp., in partnership with the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance, will commemorate the 268th anniversary of the raid with a Battle & Beverages event.

French and Indian War reenactors will stage battles at the fort at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in a demonstration of winter warfare. Inside the fort, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., guests can visit a sutlers’ market and sample and purchase locally produced wines, beers and spirits at the Craft Beverage Fair. These events are free to attend.

Battles & Beverages also includes a Frontier Food Tasting & Talk with Melanie Sawyer, which will be held at 3 p.m. This ticketed event offers guest samples of 18th-century fare, including turtle soup, apple and pork pie, venison with Vermont maple demi over rosemary French toast, cider loaf and cranberry pie. Melanie will discuss how and why these foods were prepared during the period. Tickets are $45 (tax and gratuity included) and may be purchased online.
