Photos: Lake George Polar Plunge raises more than $300K for Special Olympics

Approximately 2,000 people, and at least one dog, ran into and quickly ran back out of Lake George Saturday afternoon, with most staying in the chilly water just long enough to high-five members of the Warren County Sheriff and New York State Police Dive Teams that lined the perimeter of the swimming area.

The Freezin’ for a Reason event is an annual fundraiser for Special Olympics New York.  Funds raised support sports training and athletic competition for local Special Olympics athletes.

The Lake George Polar Plungers braved the 40-degree temperatures dressed in bathing suits, swim shorts and a variety of costumes. They entered the waters of Lake George from Shepard Park Beach in waves of teams formed from community members, corporate sponsors, local businesses, area school districts, Corrections Officers, and first responders.

The 2025 Lake George Polar Plunge Freezin’ for a Reason raised more than $300,000, well exceeding their $250,000 goal.

The Special Olympics Polar Plunge is a separate event from the New Year’s Day plunge organized by Duffy’s Tavern, which is a fundraiser for Shriners Children’s Hospital.
