Creating in the stacks: Hillview Free Library hosts stained glass workshop

Saturday morning at the Hillview Free Library in Diamond Point, participants in a morning yoga practice rolled up their mats at 10 a.m. to make room for the library’s next event, a Tiffany-style stained glass workshop. A team from the Lake George Examiner registered for the class, which was offered at no charge with a suggested donation of $15.

The stained-glass workshop was taught by glass artist John Vaughn of Glass Art by John. Vaughn, who also teaches at the Adirondack Folk School in Lake Luzerne, had filled the long library tables with buckets of colorful glass sheets, glass-cutting and grinding tools, soldering irons, and patterns for suncatchers, some with holiday themes for making Christmas ornaments.

During the four-hour class, Vaughn led his students through the steps of cutting, grinding, and soldering colored glass to create suncatchers in the shapes of angels, birds, and other designs.

At Hillview Free Library, visitors won’t find a stern librarian shushing patrons and frowning upon excited and curious children. “People should want to go to libraries,” says Library Director Margo Nelson, and she has developed a robust schedule of events that keeps the small Lake Shore Drive library a busy hive of not-always-quiet activity. Between the stacks of books, these events invite visitors to join in games of Scrabble, listen to a ukulele band, practice meditation, or develop skills in various arts and crafts.

On Thursday, November 13, 6-7:30 p.m., the community is invited to a “Grateful for You” pasta supper. The library’s board and staff are preparing a variety of pasta and sauces, including gluten-free and vegan options. The dinner includes bread, desserts and beverages. Those wishing to attend the dinner may RSVP at the library’s Community Spaghetti Supper webpage.

To help fund events, the library is holding a raffle for a 2-night stay, including a round of golf for four, at the Sagamore Resort in Bolton Landing. The package is valued at $3,700. Tickets are $25 for one, five for $100. Tickets are available online at https://givebutter.com/2025LetThereBeLight. The winning ticket will be drawn on Thursday at the Community Spaghetti Supper.
