A crowd of several thousand filled Beach Road at Blais Park in Lake George Village Saturday evening for the 27th Annual “Lite up the Village” celebration. The road was closed to traffic to make room for fire pits, bounce houses and a set of bleachers for viewing musical performances on a lakeside stage.
The block party included free carriage rides up Canada Street, marshmallow roasting and live music performed by the Newell Family, Rich Ortiz, Susie Q and Matt Donnally. Leading up to the illumination, Walt Adams of Lake George Radio served as emcee for the Ugly & Crazy Sweater Contest.
The winner of the contest’s Junior Division and the couple that won the Adult Division had the honor of throwing the switch that lit thousands of holiday lights arranged in displays throughout Blais Park, around the Centennial Fountain in Shepard Park, and along the Lakefront Walkway.
The lighting was followed by a fireworks display and the Holiday Parade of Lights with decorated fire apparatus and floats traveling down Canada Street. The final parade entry was a flatbed float carrying Santa and Mrs. Claus, who then traveled to the Lake George Firehouse to visit with children and hear their Christmas wishes.
The annual event has traditionally been held in Shepard Park; however, this winter, most of the park is closed to the public as construction is currently underway for the new bandstand. The Lake George holiday light displays, created by Village landscape designer Judy Gearwar and her crew, will remain lit each evening throughout the holiday season.
