Local author to discuss his work on the Revolutionary War Battle of Hubbardton

Dr. Bruce Venter, President of America’s History LLC, will discuss his award-winning book, “The Battle of Hubbardton: The Rear Guard that Saved America,” at the Hillview Free Library, 3717 Lake Shore Drive, Diamond Point, this Thursday, July 17, at 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Fought on July 7, 1777, the Battle of Hubbardton, one of the first engagements in Burgoyne’s campaign to capture Albany, is the only Revolutionary War battle fought in Vermont. The Battle of Bennington, Venter notes, was actually fought in New York.

“It’s time for folks to start boning up on the 1777 campaign, the turning point of the Revolution, because the 250th anniversary of these events is just around the corner,” says Venter.

“The Battle of Hubbardton: The Rear Guard that Saved America,” was selected by the editors of the Journal of the American Revolution as one the “100 Best Books on the American Revolution” and was extensively cited by Pulitzer Prize winning author Rick Atkinson in his new book, “The Fate of the Day which, in part, dealt with the Saratoga campaign.

Dr. Venter is a Lake George summer resident, a Trustee of the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance, and serves on the Saratoga County 250th Commission.  He also serves on the board of the Fort Plain Museum and Historical Park. He may be heard on the Battlefield Park Alliances’ weekly podcast, “Battlefield Moments.”

Copies of Venter’s book will be available for purchase at the Thursday event. Those wishing to attend Venter’s presentation may RSVP at the Hillview Free Library website.
