Battlefield Park Alliance kicks off 2026 programs with ‘Sir William, Where Exactly were your Lines?’ presentation

Historian and Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance member Mark Silo will present “Sir William, Where Exactly Were Your Lines?” on Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Lake George Holiday Inn Resort on Canada Street. Silo will share his study of the 1755 Battle of Lake George battlelines. The presentation begins at 11 a.m.

The Battle of Lake George was the first significant British victory in the French & Indian War and the first conflict on the grounds at the head of Lake George. The battle, a series of three engagements that took place on Sept. 8, 1755, gave provincial soldiers experience and confidence that would prove important twenty years later as the American-born soldiers battled the British in the American Revolution.

“I had long wondered when visiting Lake George Battlefield Park exactly where Sir William’s improvised barricades were,” Silo says in a press release, and he applied his expertise as a civil engineer to the question.

“My serious inquiry began when the Park Visitor Center opened in 2022, and I was more frequently on-site. After a while, I started to find strong correlations among the present terrain, contemporary map details, and historic accounts. Those correlations aligned completely to produce my findings and conclusions with full confidence.” Silo’s findings were first published in the Fort George Post, the journal of the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance.

Silo’s presentation is open to the public and free to attend. The Alliance requests that those who wish to attend RSVP at info@lakegeorgebattlefield.org to ensure a seat. This presentation is the first of several planned for 2026 by the Battlefield Park Alliance.

In addition to public events, the Alliance also offers member-only programs, which have, in the past, included floating tours of historical sites on Lake George and historian-led tours of battlefields. For more information about becoming a member, visit the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance website. Membership includes a subscription to the Fort George Post.
