Knox’s Noble Train of Artillery tribute to feature multiple events, historian Rick Atkinson to speak

The Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance and the Warren County Commission for the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution are hosting a day of special events on Friday, Dec. 12, 2025, to honor Henry Knox’s 1775-1776 winter expedition known as the Noble Train of Artillery. 250 years ago, Knox hauled 60 tons of artillery through severe winter weather from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston to deliver General George Washington’s army cannon and other armaments needed to liberate Boston from the British.

“Lake George was not just a stop along Henry Knox’s route — it was a critical staging ground where plans were made and the journey to Boston truly began,” said John DiNuzzo, president of the Alliance. “Knox’s time at Fort George (in today’s Lake George Battlefield Park) underscores how central this region was to the success of the Noble Train of Artillery and, ultimately, to the Revolution itself.”

The December 12 commemoration will begin at 3 p.m. at the head of Lake George on Beach Road with the arrival of Henry Knox by boat with cannon. Knox will be greeted with a fife and drum tandem, 18th-century soldier reenactors and camp life demonstrations.

A horse and cart will transport Knox and the replica artillery to Fort George in Battlefield Park. There, Colonel Knox will speak to attendees about his journey from Fort Ticonderoga to the South Shore of Lake George.

From 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., the Alliance will hold a reception for Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Rick Atkinson at the Holiday Inn Resort on Canada Street. Atkinson is the author of the bestsellers “The British are Coming” and “The Fate of the Day,” the first two books of his American Revolution trilogy.

Atkinsone will discuss the American Revolution and other history topics with guests. Refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Those attending the reception have the option to include a signed copy of “The Fate of the Day” in their ticket purchase.

Tickets purchased before Nov. 12 are $50, $60 after the 12th and at the door. This price includes the signed book. Tickets to attend without receiving a book are $30.

Tickets are available exclusively online at https://lake-george-battlefield-park-alliance.square.site/. The Alliance expects that tickets will sell out quickly.

The public is invited to attend a free presentation by Rick Atkinson at Lake George High School at 7 p.m. The Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra Quintet will open the event with a performance of period music. Atkinson will hold a Q&A session with attendees and copies of his books will be available for sale.

“History isn’t static on the page,” Atkinson said in an Alliance press release. “Events like these give us the chance to experience history as a living, shared story—one that still shapes who we are as a nation.”

Atkinson plans to spend part of the day meeting with Lake George Students at the High School. Students were assigned Atkinson’s accounts of the American Revolution as part of their summer reading. “Meeting the author affords our students an opportunity to engage with a renowned storyteller who can breathe life into historic events that literally happened in our backyard,” says High School Principal Francis Cocozza. “Our young men and women are very grateful for his visit, as are their teachers and parents.”

Continuation of the Knox Noble Artillery Train tribute is being coordinated by Warren, Washington, Saratoga and Albany Counties. Additional commemorations will take place on December 13 and 14 in Fort Edward, Fort Miller, Schuylerville, Cohoes and Albany.
