The second weekend of the Lake George Winter Carnival started with bright sunshine and four-wheel drive vehicles tearing up the frozen lake in front of Million Dollar Beach. The spectacle of modified pickup trucks, SUVs and Jeeps spinning their wheels along the icy track drew several hundred spectators this Saturday, Feb. 8.
Approximately 30 vehicles entered the competition, which is sponsored by King Neptune’s Pub.
The Lake George Winter Carnival Committee announced Friday evening that it had withdrawn its support of the event when it learned King Neptune’s was unable to procure insurance. The races will continue Sunday, Feb. 9 at 11:30 a.m.
Last winter, races on the ice were cancelled due to inadequate ice thickness, but the arctic temperatures of 2014 has frozen the ice to a thickness in excess of 12 inches, enough to safely race motor vehicles across its surface.
This weekend also featured a barbecue cook-off. Carnival attendees, for $5, sampled barbecued meats from 10 area eateries and voted for their favorite. This year, the Barnsider took first place, Fort William Henry Resort took the second position, and Prospect Mountain Diner and Blue Moose Tavern tied for third.
Other activities this weekend included ice diving demonstrations, Radio Disney show in Shepard Park, pony rides, children’s indoor activities at King Neptune’s, helicopter rides, a bonfire on the beach and fireworks.
Sunday at 1 p.m., employees of area restaurants and taverns will compete in the annual Tavern Competition.
Next weekend, Feb. 15 and 16, the Lake George Winter Carnival will feature Motorcycle and ATV Ice races sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist’s Association.
