Alliance to host ‘Fallen Heroes of Lake George Battlefield Park’ tours

As part of the I LOVE NY “Path Through History Weekend,” the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance is offering guided tours of the burial sites in the park. The one-hour tours will be held on Saturday, June 20, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The tours are free and open to the public.

Battlefield Park is home to two burial sites: One honoring soldiers who fought in the French and Indian War and another where those who served in the American Revolution have been laid to rest.

Fort William Henry’s Director of Historic Interpretation, Andrew Menzie, and President of the Lake George Battlefield Alliance, John DiNuzzo, will serve as guides. They will tell the stories of those buried at the Grave of the Four Unknown Soldiers and the 44 individuals interred at the Repose of the Fallen. Participants will learn about the military units represented by the deceased, whom they fought, how they died, and how they came to be buried in Lake George Battlefield Park.

The four unknown soldiers were killed during the 1755 Battle of Lake George. Their remains were discovered in the 1930s by road-building crews along State Route 9. They were reinterred in Battlefield Park in 1935.

The 44 individuals interred at the Repose of the Fallen memorial are associated with the Continental Army and the 1776 smallpox hospital at Fort George in what is now Battlefield Park. Their unmarked graves were discovered in 2019 by a construction crew excavating on Courtland Street in the Village of Lake George. After seven years of planning to create an appropriate burial site and memorial, their remains were reinterred at the “Repose of the Fallen” memorial on May 22 of this year.

The tours will begin at the Battlefield Park Visitor Center, 75 Fort George Road, Lake George.
