Bolton Landing Farmers’ Market offers a lively shopping experience

Hanging geraniums, potted herbs, baked goods, honey, maple syrup, goat cheese, handcrafted jewelry and crates of fresh produce are just a sample of what visitors will find at the Bolton Landing Farmers’ Market. The Market operates each Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning the last Friday in June through Labor Day at 5 Cross Street (behind the Bolton Town Hall) in the heart of Bolton Landing, New York.

Penelope Jewell, who founded the Market with two other people 13 years ago, says the Market is popular with summer visitors. “We want our visitors to meet our community and see how great we are,” says Jewell. To this end, the Market offers space to community organizations such as the American Legion and charges vendors a minimum amount to encourage individual producers to participate. Each week, as many as 30 vendors set up booths.

Live music adds to the Market’s festival atmosphere with different bands booked to perform each week. Special events include free strawberry shortcakes to “kids of all ages” to celebrate Independence Day Weekend and free blueberry shortcakes are offered in mid-August. On the final Friday of the season, the Market offers free apple pie and the town historian brings an antique cider press. Children can help press apples with a turn of the handle.

The Market welcomes children and gives each child attending the market two “Kids Koins,” wooden discs they may use to purchase a fruit or vegetable from a market vendor. Jewell says it gets the children involved and talking to vendors. “The kids go home happy and the parents love it,” says Jewell.

Bolton Landing Farmers’ Market is wheelchair and stroller accessible and ample free parking is available in an adjacent parking lot. Leashed pets are welcome. This open-air market is held rain or shine.
