Lake George Dog Park lets 4-pawed kids run free

Doggie Parents will have a place to let their pets run unleashed in Lake George with the opening of a Dog Park at the Lake George Recreation Center. The official ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for Aug. 3 at 11 a.m. The Lake George Recreation Center is on Transfer Road off Route 9N (the Luzerne Road) approximately one-half mile from the Adirondack Northway Exit 21.

The facility includes two fenced in sections, one for small dogs, 14 inches and less to shoulder, and one for large dogs, more than 14 inches to shoulder. There is a watering station on site, running tubes, benches for doggie parents and pet waste removal stations to keep things tidy. Village workers will be constructing a permanent structure to provide shade at the park according to a Village press release.

The Dog Park will be open during daylight hours. Use of the park is free. All dogs must be accompanied by a handler, and handlers are required to clean up their pet’s waste and dispose of it in containers provided for that purpose. The Lake George Dog Park is a tobacco-free facility.

The dog park is one of several dog-friendly spots in Lake George Village. Dogs are welcome in Shepard Park on Canada Street, and a stretch of State-owned beach on Beach Road is designated as the Dog Beach. Throughout the Village, dog owners will find pet watering stations and waste removal stations.

Lisa Giknis, owner of The Dog Cabin, was instrumental in keeping the Dog Beach open when the state proposed closing the area to the public. Credit also goes to Giknis for conceiving and planning the Lake George Dog Park. The Dog Cabin, located on Montcalm Street, is a doggy boutique offering dog supplies, training and dog massages. The Dog Cabin also hosts doggie talent shows each weekend at the Lake George Winter Carnival.
