Lake George parking meters now take smartphone payments

You no longer will have to scrounge around for quarters to feed parking meters when you visit Lake George. The Village has implemented the ParkMobile system, which allows drivers to pay for parking via an app on their iOs and Android devices.

Users may download the app from the ParkMobile website, create an account and link it to their credit card, debit card or PayPal account. Drivers complete their profile by inserting the license plate numbers of their vehicles. To use the app, drivers pull into a parking space and enter the Zone Code found on the meter. If the app is given location permissions, it will display a map of the area with corresponding Zone Codes.

To begin a parking session, select the amount of time desired, the vehicle license plate number and tap the “Start Parking” button. The coin-operated meters will continue to blink “expired,” but meter enforcement personnel are equipped with hand-held devices that will let them see you have paid for your spot.

Visitors to Lake George know the frustration of having to pick through pocket change to pay for parking. Falling short, many must beg for change from local businesses. Last month, The Dog Cabin on Montcalm Street posted a message on social media explaining they just did not have enough quarters to give everyone change for the parking meters. The Village says it adopted this new payment option primarily for the convenience it offers.

“With this new partnership, our guests will now be able to easily and safely pay for parking on their mobile device. If they choose to stay longer at the beach, in a restaurant or just relax, they will never have to return to their vehicle to add to the time.” — Village of Lake George Mayor Robert Blais

Those that arrive with plenty of change, or use a credit card at a Pay-and-Display kiosk, must keep an eye on the time and make a mad dash to add time before a meter enforcement officer comes by with a pad of parking tickets. The ParkMobile app will alert users when time is running out so they may add time from a remote location if they wish.

“No one likes parking meters but in a resort community, with limited parking, they are absolutely necessary,” says Mayor Blais in a press statement. “This app makes it easier, more palatable and does away with multiple reasons for letting the meter run-out.” This system does not replace the current system, the meters still accept quarters. The ParkMobile app is an addition to the traditional ways of paying for parking.
