Lake George pulls through Hurricane Sandy with little damage

One Lake George Village dock, an older one slated for replacement, was torn from its moorings; a few boards are missing from the remaining docks. As the sun rises over Lake George this morning, October 30, there is no other evidence that Hurricane Sandy passed through.

Last night, shortly before 6:30 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a flood warning for Lake George. Wind gusts of 65 mph pushed down the length of the lake, creating waves that threatened to spill over the shoreline. Docks along the lake took a beating, but no flooding occurred. “We really dodged a bullet,” one resident commented this morning while walking her dog in Shepard Park.

In August of 2011, Beach Road and sections of Canada Street, on the Southern tip of the lake, were flooded when Hurricane Irene brought strong winds and heavy rain to the region.

The Village of Lake George Department of Public Works made quick work of replacing missing boards from damaged docks this morning. Area schools, with the exception of SUNY Adirondack and Schroon Lake CSD, returned to their regular schedules after cancelling after-school activities yesterday.   SUNY Adirondack and Schroon Lake Central announced yesterday that they would be closed today in anticipation of storm-related problems.
