Lake George Village to honor CPL. Ben Osborn with ceremony to rename street

Village of Lake George officials will hold a ceremony in front of the Lake George High School on Tuesday, June 9, at 3 p.m. to honor Corporal Benjamin D. Osborn. At that time, the section of Mountain Drive between Canada and Ottawa Streets, which runs along the north side of the school, will officially be renamed Ben Osborn Boulevard. The public is invited to attend.

Ben Osborn, a 2002 Lake George Junior/Senior High School graduate, was killed in combat in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, in June 2010 while serving with the United States Army during Operation Enduring Freedom.

This past February, the Village of Lake George Board of Trustees unanimously passed a resolution to rename a street in his honor. “Renaming this street was one way to honor a wonderful man who was selfless,” said Village Mayor Ray Perry in a press statement. “The Board of Trustees and I felt it was right and just to commemorate him this way as he left a big imprint in our community.”

Following the tragedy of Ben’s death, his father, Bill Osborn, founded the Ben Osborn Memorial Fund. “I had a germ of an idea,” Osborn said at the 2019 Baskets for Ben fundraiser, “and I had no idea where it was going to go or how it was going to turn out… I just knew we had to do something more.”

The Ben Osborn Memorial Fund, with the tag line “Giving Kids a Little Lift,” has several initiatives, including a scholarship program, aid to local food pantries, Ben’s Book Stations and a holiday giving program. The Fund works with area school district personnel to identify children in need. The Fund assists children by providing help with needs such as school supplies, electronics, eyeglasses, musical instruments, and field trip admission fees.

“As the Osborn family works diligently to provide assistance to our schools, this is a way to say thank you for all their hard work and to continue a local hero’s legacy,” said Mayor Perry.
