Battlefield Park tours offered during Path Through History Summer Weekend 2023

On Father’s Day Weekend, visitors to Lake George Battlefield Park will have the opportunity to join a guided tour as part of New York State’s Path Through History Weekend. On Saturday, June 17 at 11 a.m., and again on Sunday, June 18 at 1 p.m., members of the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance will be conducting one-hour tours that will highlight key places in the park. Lake George Battlefield Park was the site of several significant actions in the French and Indian war and the American Revolution.

The tour will include stops at the ruins of Fort George, which was constructed in 1759, the burial place of four unknown soldiers who were killed in the 1755 Battle of Lake George, the Park’s historic statues and the remnants of hospitals and kilns that served soldiers during the two 18th century conflicts.

The tours are free and will begin at the Lake George Battlefield Park Visitor Center, 75 Fort George Road, Lake George. Those wishing to join a tour may register by emailing info@lakegeorgebattlefield.org. The Visitor Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days. For the 2023 season, the Alliance has added new features to the Center including pre-Colonial era Native American artifacts and the remains of a 1758 British bateau.

The Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance, a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization, was formed in 2001 to preserve the historic site and educate the public on its importance to American history. The establishment of the Visitor Center, which opened in May 2022, was the realization of an idea conceived more than 100 years ago as a place to display artifacts and exhibits that highlight the park’s history.

The Visitor Center will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays,10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through June. The days of operation expand to Thursday through Monday, July 1 to September 4, and will return to the Friday, Saturday and Sunday schedule from September 8 through October 29, 2023.

New York Path Through History Weekend is a state-wide program that showcases the state’s museums, forts, historic landmarks and homes of historically significant New York writers, artists and social activists. The fall New York Path Through History Weekend will be held on Columbus Day Weekend, October 7 through 9, 2023.
