Photos: Lake George celebrates St. Patrick’s Day

Although the ground is still buried in snow, and ice fishermen are still out on the lake monitoring their tip-ups, there was plenty of green to be seen in Lake George this St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Local taverns were packed with revelers draped in glittery green hats, green-beaded necklaces and other shamrock-themed accessories. Eateries across town were serving up corned beef and dark, foamy Guinness was the preferred drink of the weekend.

Sham “Rock” the Block was launched in 2011 as a one-day St. Patrick’s Day block party, an initiative of merchants on Lower Amherst Street. The following year it ran an entire weekend and included the first Lake George St. Patrick’s Day parade. The tradition continues with Duffy’s Tavern as Sham Rock headquarters. Duffy’s hosts Celtic entertainment, including step dancers, in their upper barroom. The party spills out into the street where the hardy gather around firepits and raise a toast to St. Paddy with mittened hands.

The Lake George Regional Chamber of Commerce held its Sham “Rock” the Block Vendor Fair at the Holiday Inn on Saturday, March 16. Twenty vendors participated in this year’s fair giving shoppers the opportunity to sample locally produced foods, learn about essential oils, green cleaning products and travel opportunities. Merchandise vendors offered a wide selection of clothing, jewelry and gift items. DJ Chas Giknis of Absolute Sound provided music for the event, which is in its second year.

Despite a blustery March wind, a crowd lined Canada Street Sunday at noon for the St. Patrick’s Day parade up Canada Street. Marchers this year included the Ancient Order of Hibernians, The Lake George Volunteer and Bay Ridge Fire Departments, Warrensburg Girl Scouts, Caldwell Presbyterian pre-school students, Adirondack Zombie Hunters, Love is on Lake George Cruises and NYS Corrections Emerald Society Pipe Band.
