Local farm opens u-pick pumpkin patch each fall

The Lake George Examiner team headed north to It’s About Thyme Farm this weekend in search of pumpkins and gourds to decorate front stoops and to find the perfect Jack-o-lantern pumpkin for Halloween. The farm is in the Minerva hamlet of Olmstedville, about a forty-minute drive from Lake George. It was an easy trip that took us through mountains lit with autumn color.

There is no glossy marketing or long lines at It’s About Thyme. Visitors navigate a winding drive to the edge of the u-pick pumpkin patch, grab a wagon and venture out through rows of pumpkins — large, small, round and oblong. Most are orange, some are white, and a few are stripped with varying shades of gold, honey and apricot.

The pumpkin patch opens the second week in September each year and stays open through October. Pumpkin prices range from $6 to $20, depending on size. It’s About Thyme also sells hardy mums and fresh-made cider doughnuts. On weekends in the fall, pumpkin pickers are offered a complimentary doughnut and cup of hot apple cider.

The Farm also offers u-pick apples. Honeycrisps dominate the orchard, but there are some Macintosh and Empires too. A half-peck of apples is $8.95.

In the spirit of Halloween, a scarecrow trail encircles the pumpkin patch and apple orchard. The trail begins with dozens of smiling, cute scarecrows, but becomes a little creepy around the backside of the orchard with skeletons, ghosts and maniacal-looking dolls.

The farm is more than a pumpkin patch. It’s About Thyme opens for the season in May and sells annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, flats of vegetables and herbs. In July, the farm opens its fields for u-pick vegetables and operates a vegetable stand loaded with fresh produce.

Sept.10 through Oct. 30, the farm is open for u-pick pumpkins Thursday-Monday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
