500-plus vendors to sell at the 2018 World’s Largest Garage Sale

It started 39 years ago with a handful of Warrensburg residents setting up yard sales to make a little extra money before winter set in. It has grown to become the World’s Largest Garage Sale, attracting tens of thousands of bargain hunters to the Adirondack hamlet each fall. The 2018 sale opens for business Saturday, Sept. 29, at 7 a.m. and continues through Sunday, Sept. 30, with vendors closing shop around 5 p.m.

The 2018 garage sale promises to be one of the largest with more than 500 vendors participating, including 25 food vendors serving up steaming portions of American, Greek, Italian, Mexican and Mid-eastern favorites with a good (healthy and unhealthy) dose of carnival specialties — cotton candy, kettle corn, roasted nuts and deep-fried everything. (One year, the smell of fried dough so heavily permeated the air surrounding Warrensburg, a bear was brought over the mountain, forcing an elementary school teacher to cancel her class’ planned hike up Hackensack Mountain the Monday following Garage Sale Weekend.)

For 2018, the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce created an online, interactive map to help visitors navigate through traffic and find central vendor locations, restrooms facilities, ATMs and lists residential sales where some of the best bargains can be found.

Free parking is available at the Warren County Fair Grounds and the Warrensburg Jr./Sr. High School with shuttle buses running a regular route from the parking lots to the hubs of activity along Main, Hudson and Elm Streets. RV and Handicapped parking are available at both lots. For $25, RVs may park in the thick of things at the Warrensburg firehouse on Elm Street. Proceeds will benefit the fire department.

In addition to flea markets, craft items, traditional yard sales and antiques, visitors to the 2018 World’s Largest Garage Sale will find live music at the bandstand in the center of town and an Oktoberfest across from the bandstand on the Merrill Magee Inn lawn.
