Veterans Day Musket salute honors service members

Standing amid a Field of Flags this Veterans Day, French and Indian war Reenactors marked the 100th anniversary of the WWI Armistice with a musket salute. Earlier this month, volunteers carefully inserted 6,625 miniature American flags into the Fort William Henry hotel lawn. The flags are organized by wars, from the colonial period to current conflicts, and each carries the name of a veteran or active duty military personnel.

Today, a final flag was added to the Fort William Henry 2018 Field of Flags to honor US Navy Captain Robert Flacke, Sr. Flacke, who served for decades as President of Fort William Henry Corp., passed away yesterday, Nov. 10.

The Field of Flags tradition began in 2014. Over a two-year period, the Fort William Henry Museum collected names of veterans from visitors, asking them to enter the information in binders. Each year, additional names are added and the public may submit names by calling (518)964-6647. This year’s Field of Flags will be in place through Monday, Nov. 12.
